Write a post in less than 8 minutes

Ξ January 25th, 2008 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Art, Humour |

16H52. I have 8 minutes before going to the nursery and get my daughter. Is this possible to make a post before that ?

The post must be intuitive and not logical. It reminds me of a book I recently crossed. Blink, the power of thinking without thinking. It’s about intuition as a very quick way of thinking rather than a feeling or a sixth sense.

Recently, with the desire to live better, I see lots of beautiful things around me. I re-established contact with an old friend and we speak to one another as if our last meeting dates back to yesterday (hello Alain), I discovered an extraordinary art form of light painting (video below) that I will try this weekend with my kids at home, I visited a site devoted to the extraordinary colour of Blue Klein, and I advanced in the drafting of an important document for my research. Not to mention that a person I do not even know offered me a great book on collective intelligence (thanks Olivier), and a friend came to see me this week without warning (Hi Stephane), just to say hello, which I greatly appreciate in a world that is becoming too square for my taste.

Top. 12 minutes. Published. 50% too late. For the computer engineer in me, this is is reasonable :)

Counting sheep

Ξ December 28th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Apprendre, Humour |

It’s not new, but I didn’t know that it was official. Two researchers from Oxford University have concluded in 2002: counting sheep is ineffective against insomnia!

This mental exercise, whose origin is probably a system of counting used by English and Scottish shepherds called Yan Tan Tethera, is particularly known in some European cultures. Unfortunately, this activity is so boring that the brain tries to find other topics of interest thereby stimulating his activity and keeping us awake longer than usual…

The two researchers made an experiment. They took 50 people who have trouble getting to sleep and asked a third of them to count sheep and another third to imagine a beach or a waterfall. The rest were asked not to do either so they could compare the results.

Those imagining the waterfall fell asleep 20 minutes earlier than usual and the sheep counters actually stayed awake longer than usual…

Good night to you all, including Mr Bean that my daughter Leora loves so much.

Lost with a GPS

Ξ December 24th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Enfants, Humour |

My GPS seems to be a source of inspiration to my kids.

Example :

All the family is in the car and the traffic is heavy. The GPS is guiding us and we’ve just entered a tunnel.
GPS : “…Satellites connection lost”
Leora (my 2nd daughter, 3 1/2 year old): “Are we lost?”
Elya (my 1st daughter, 5 1/2 year old) : “No ! The GPS is lost”

Another one:
Elya : “How does Father Christmas finds the parents who have kids in order to bring the christmas gifts ? After all, there are parents that don’t have kids…”
Me : … silent …
Elya : “I know ! He has a GPS !”

A last one :
Me : “You know, there are shoes with GPS.”
Elya : “Really ?”
Me : “Yes ! look here, shoes with GPS
Elya : “Wooooow, great … will they tell me where to go ?”
Me : “Not exactly. They will make me possible to find you, if you are lost”
Elya : “Hmm… so I shouldn’t go inside tunnels !”
Me : “Exactly !”

So smart …
