Happy New Year 2008

Ξ December 29th, 2007 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Reflexion |

The days preceding the New Year are special. It is then that we form the thoughts in the hope they become reality. This capacity of creation, a priori unique to human kind, enables us to make, go forward and get better.

Now that I am forty years old, I believe that the key for creation is in the capacity to change. A successful change, i.e. one which leads to new good habits and the abolition of the bad ones, is the consequence of looking the future, not analyzing the past.

I hope year 2008 will be, for me and for you, the continuation and the beginning of a change. Look at the future and change whatever you believe is important. You are capable of doing it, using the right strategy.

This year, I will continue changing in order to be and stay happy. As Mark Twain said: “Happiness is like when the sun goes down in Sweden - it is there for all but the majority of us look elsewhere”.

Happy New Year 2008 to you all, from me, my Florence and my kids !

Counting sheep

Ξ December 28th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Apprendre, Humour |

It’s not new, but I didn’t know that it was official. Two researchers from Oxford University have concluded in 2002: counting sheep is ineffective against insomnia!

This mental exercise, whose origin is probably a system of counting used by English and Scottish shepherds called Yan Tan Tethera, is particularly known in some European cultures. Unfortunately, this activity is so boring that the brain tries to find other topics of interest thereby stimulating his activity and keeping us awake longer than usual…

The two researchers made an experiment. They took 50 people who have trouble getting to sleep and asked a third of them to count sheep and another third to imagine a beach or a waterfall. The rest were asked not to do either so they could compare the results.

Those imagining the waterfall fell asleep 20 minutes earlier than usual and the sheep counters actually stayed awake longer than usual…

Good night to you all, including Mr Bean that my daughter Leora loves so much.

Lost with a GPS

Ξ December 24th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Enfants, Humour |

My GPS seems to be a source of inspiration to my kids.

Example :

All the family is in the car and the traffic is heavy. The GPS is guiding us and we’ve just entered a tunnel.
GPS : “…Satellites connection lost”
Leora (my 2nd daughter, 3 1/2 year old): “Are we lost?”
Elya (my 1st daughter, 5 1/2 year old) : “No ! The GPS is lost”

Another one:
Elya : “How does Father Christmas finds the parents who have kids in order to bring the christmas gifts ? After all, there are parents that don’t have kids…”
Me : … silent …
Elya : “I know ! He has a GPS !”

A last one :
Me : “You know, there are shoes with GPS.”
Elya : “Really ?”
Me : “Yes ! look here, shoes with GPS
Elya : “Wooooow, great … will they tell me where to go ?”
Me : “Not exactly. They will make me possible to find you, if you are lost”
Elya : “Hmm… so I shouldn’t go inside tunnels !”
Me : “Exactly !”

So smart …

one, two, three…

Ξ December 20th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Santé |

Yesterday, I was counting my foot steps on the way to the post office. 754 one way, 723 on the way back. Okay, I admit it’s a little annoying to count .. (maybe buying a podometer is a good idea). I then asked myself how many steps should I make every day in order to be in good shape ?

Well… some say the answer is 10.000 steps per day.

In what seems to be a serious revue Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke classifies our daily steps per day as follow:

  • <5000 : you are having a sedentary lifestyle, be careful
  • 5000-7500 : low activity, no sport, can do much better
  • 7500-10000 : somewhat actif, please do some more effort
  • 10000-12500 : active. good !
  • >12500 : highly active (is that good ?)

I recently read the quite extraordinary book eat to live. The author, Dr Joel Fuhrman, describes our nutritional habits in a rather frightening way. He says our food consumption patterns a recipe for suicide. But the book is not all that bad, quite the contrary. He explains how better eating can make us lose weight naturally, live longer, prevent heart disease etc…Of course, he reminds us that being active is very important too. So … 10.000 steps per day to be active. All of you readers, be good and healthy ! Start counting your steps .. 1..2..3..

New hoster, iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiipower web

Ξ December 17th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Bloguer |

That’s it; I have a new web hosting service. This blog is now hosted by ipower (originally ipowerweb), a reliable and powerful hoster that I was able to evaluate thanks to Marie-Jeanne (Thanks!).

I see already significant improvement in performance. Hopefully it will last.

When creating a business, the name is often difficult to find. In the case of ipower, I find it very powerful … In fact, it makes me think of a Kiai (japanese karate shout used to focus) : iiiiiiiiiiiipoooooowwwwwwweeeeeeeerrrrrrrr web.

Internet ? Why ?

Ξ December 17th, 2007 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Economie, Politique |

The Internet is part of a huge change that we are experiencing.

Change is always difficult. It destroys one’s work and creates new opportunities for others.
But nothing stops progress. Not even terrorism, conservative minds, or people refusing to talk about change.

Shimon Peres talks about that in an extraordinary manner (at the LeWeb3 2006).

A must see.
